These photographs were made in the Balkans, namely the countries of former Yugoslavia and their neighbors. I have continuously returned here to make pictures in an unstructured, unplanned way while traveling by rental car, bus, train, crisscrossing borders of recently formed and re-formed nations. I am fascinated by the struggle and endurance that pulses through a place damaged by history, the humanity I find here, and the bright gravity of the people I meet. Through a type of travel diary or personal journalism, I have been trying to sketch a geography of heart and mind.
